Vehicle categories

In the Hungarian system, the type of vignette needed is determined on the basis of category classification.

These vehicle categories have been specified according to the official entry in the vehicle registration certificate, so you can always check it out there. The maximum number of persons is determined by the official entry (‘S.1.’ – number of seats incl. driver), not the number of seats currently visible in the vehicle.

Category D1
The code under field ‘J’ in the vehicle registration certificate: ‘M1’. Passenger cars, motor vehicles with up to 5+2 seats and a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tons, and their combination with a trailer.

Motorcycle category D1M
Motorcycles belong here. *Annual national and regional e-vignettes for motorcycles are available at the rates of vehicle category D1.

Category D2
All motor vehicles not falling into any other vehicle category and not being subject to toll payment under a separate legislation. According to the vehicle registration certificate, the code in field ‘J’ may be ‘M1’ in case of passenger cars which are designed to carry more than 7 persons, or ‘N1’ in case of lorries (up to the maximum gross weight of 3.5 tons).

Category U
Trailers towed by vehicle category D2 belong here. According to the vehicle registration certificate, the code in field ‘J’ may be ‘O1’ in case of trailers up to the maximum permissible gross weight of 750 kg. The code may be ‘O2’ in case of trailers with the maximum permissible gross weight of 0.75–3.5 tons. Category U vignettes shall be purchased for the vehicle registration number of the trailer.
